In the game, the player controls up to six characters in a wild west setting. The protagonist is a worldly knife-fighter and gunslinger, John Cooper. He takes on a bounty to capture a notorious train-robber named 'El Diablo'. As Cooper sets off on his quest, he is aided by five other friends and they work together in a real-time, stealth-based structure very similar to that introduced in Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines, although all-out gunfights are still highly possible in the game.
A sequel called Desperados 2: Cooper's Revenge was released in late March 2006. A second sequel, Helldorado, (announced as expansion pack Desperados 2: Conspiracy but made into a full game) was released in mid-2007 in Germany. The English version was released in some regions in November 2007. A fourth entry, Desperados III, is currently in development by Mimimi Productions and published by THQ Nordic. The game is set to be released for Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2019.[2]
Spellbound was developing a follow-up with more multiplayer elements and steampunk-oriented, Desperados Gangs, but they shut down before they could find a publisher.[3]
Plot[edit]
The game takes place in 1881. Many trains have been robbed the last few months by a mysterious and vicious bandit known as El Diablo. The railroad company Twinnings & Co has offered $15,000 to the one who can stop El Diablo. Bounty hunter John Cooper accepts the task, despite the objections of the bad-tempered and contemptuous US Marshal Jackson. However, he soon learns that the mission is not as simple as he thinks.
Cooper gathers a team of his old partners to aid him on his quest, consisting of African-American explosives fanatic Sam Williams; Doc McCoy, a physician, safecracker and sniper; and seductive gambler Kate O'Hara. His group successfully captures the notorious bandit leader Pablo Sanchez; but as they attempt to deliver him to the authorities, they run into (and thwart) an ambush set by El Diablo's bandits. This and Sanchez's explanations that El Diablo has an informant at Twinnings lets Cooper conclude that Smith, the company's co-director who hired him, is the snitch. Smith is assassinated before Cooper can get some answers, and chased by Jackson's posse for murder, he frees Sanchez from prison and enlists his help. Mia Yung, a young Chinese girl, also joins the team after Jackson's men kill her father at his outpost, vowing to avenge his death.
El Diablo finally turns out to be Marshal Jackson himself, who captures the group and imprisons them in his secret headquarters in a cave. They escape with the help of Mia's pet monkey, Mr. Leone. Cooper chases El Diablo up to his office and kills him in the subsequent gunfight.
Gameplay[edit]
The player can use a 'spyglass' function on NPCs to see their fields of vision. Depending on the color of the cone, the player can see the mental state of the NPC. If the cone is green, it means the person is calm. Similarly, a yellow cone signifies suspicion, and a red means the NPC has spotted one of the characters. Some colors signify special status such as a pink cone, meaning the NPC has become attracted to Kate, or a black cone, meaning they have been hit by Mia's blowpipe.
Another special feature is the Quick Action, in which certain actions - from running to a certain place up to using a weapon against a pre-targeted enemy - can be 'pre-programmed' and called upon immediately when needed. For instance, by programming his revolver with Quick Action, Cooper can either concentrate all three shots that he can fire on a single opponent or divide them between up to three targets without having to move the mouse cursor around.
Development[edit]
Physical copies of the game released in the United States featured an alternate cover art by famed comic book artist Glenn Fabry.[4]
An add-on was announced, but it was never released.[5]
On 5th July 2018, an update was released that improved compatibility with newer Windows OS, as well as ports to MacOS and Linux, added foreign dubs that were previously missing from most digital versions, and its mission from the game's demo brought into the full game.[1][6]

The game received generally favorable reviews from critics. On the review aggregator GameRankings, 80% of critics gave the game positive reviews, based on 28 reviews.[10] On Metacritic, the game had an average score of 78 out of 100, based on 12 reviews.[11]

Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive is a love it or hate it kind of game. Either you hate puzzle-based strategy designs that force you to “get it right,” reloading saved game after saved game until you figure out the proper way in which to complete a mission, or you love the challenge of figuring out how the designers want you to approach a specific scenario. If puzzle games are to your liking, Desperados is well worth your time.
Much like Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines, the game it most resembles, you need to approach each mission as if it’s a puzzle. You lead a small squad of outlaws through twenty-five gorgeous scenarios. Each member of your team has unique abilities and it’s up to you figure out the best way in which to utilize them. Thankfully, the game isn’t so scripted that only one plan of attack works. Usually there are multiple solutions to certain problems, especially once you get your entire team together.

Your gang consists John Cooper, a quick drawing tough guy that reminds you of Clint Eastwood and who suspiciously resembles Bruce Willis. He carries a knife, which he alternately uses to gut people or free them from capture. Other partners include Sam Williams, a former plantation slave who is good with explosives. Doc McCoy is the team’s healer. Kate O’Hara is the sex kitten who distracts guards. Mia Yung is a blow dart expert and uses her pet monkey to distract enemies (I’m not joking). Finally there’s Sanchez, the hefty Mexican who drinks Tequila. Radio decoding software. So yes, it’s quite a colorful squad of outlaws.

The environments in each mission play a key role. In fact, studying the landscape is critical to success as it all factors into the puzzle of each scenario. For example, high grass is good for lying low—so much so that if you are in tall grass it’s virtually impossible for the enemy to see you even if you are shooting at them from five feet away. Using your character’s items in conjunction with the terrain makes for some compelling and rewarding gameplay. There’s no fog of war either, so you can pan the camera anywhere to plan your moves and watch enemy patrols.
The bad guy and townsfolk AI is scripted, but in a game like this that’s not necessarily a bad thing. If a commoner sees a dead body lying in the street he or she will run off and alert the authorities. Thankfully, you can drag bodies out of sight as to avoid such a calamity. However, your teammates’ AI is a bit odd in that it’s completely nonexistent. Your team does nothing at all without direction. Even when being filled full of lead they sit there and take it with a smile.
The biggest problem is that the game is exceedingly hard, and there are no difficulty settings to aid the unsuspecting. Even with the ability to save your game at any point during a mission, the game is just too damn tough and unforgiving. All it takes is one false mouse click or a missed shot that alerts guards and it’s time to reload. Nothing is more frustrating than playing a mission for an hour, forgetting to save, and getting killed by a sniper that you didn’t even see.
In conclusion, Desperados is a tough nut to crack. While it’s impossible to overlook the game’s unforgiving level of difficulty, it is often entertaining. If you have a plethora of patience and are looking for a wildly challenging puzzle/strategy game set in the Wild West, then go for it.
